Open Source Programs For Mac's
(Sunday, May 17 - Friday, May 22, 2009)

Location:http://knowschools.ca
Facilitator: Verna Lynn Gorrill, Canada

"Open source refers to any program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit. (Historically, the makers of proprietary software have generally not made source code available.) Open source software is usually developed as a public collaboration and made freely available." (definition taken from http://searchenterpriselinux.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid39_gci212709,00.html).

In this knowWEEK we will look at open source programs that can be used on a Mac. We will look at programs that you can use for web browsing, video podcasting, instant messaging, emails, podcasting, video playback, word processing/office suites, sound recording, publishing, as well as others.

We will also look at ways that you can use these tools in your classroom. We will share some examples of how teachers are currently using these in the classrooms.

About Verna Lynn Gorrill:

Verna Lynn has taken a number of KnowWeek classes over the past year and has just recently got into the facilitator role. She is working towards her eTeach Certificate through Capilano University/knowplace Family of Sites partnership.

When Verna Lynn turned 30, she decided what she wanted to be "when I grow up". She headed back to university to get her teaching degree and has been teaching for 6 1/2 years. She currently teaches grades 5 & 6 in Bulyea, Saskatchewan. She is a "high school teacher" by trade but has taught almost all grades.

She enjoys reading, watching all sports, camping, listening to music and "surfing" (the net that is). She spends most of her spare time either doing things with her two boys or learning new things that she can do on the computer. Most of her friends consider her a 24/7 computer geek.
